Description he beautiful and giant thorny bamboo grows to 35 metres in height within its natural habitat and still 20 metres in southern Europe, however, within our regions it is more suited for tub cultivation, the winter garden or the porch. On a matured plant. the dark blue stalks are full of thornes and its leaves are green and of large size. The bamboo is growing strictly upright, loves warm climate and requires a lot of space. Planted outside this space should be 2 square metres wide. The plant is fast-growing. During its growing period it increases its size 40 cm a day. You can almost sit and watch it growing. It tolerates pruning well, also temperatures down to -2°C and -8°C for a short period of time. Sprouts of the giant thorny bamboo are edible. Flowering can be expected after 25 years. Sowing Advice The seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Press the cereal-like seeds onto moist cultivation soil, cover them thinly with the substratum and move the container in a warm spot. Given temperatures around 25°C and even moisture, the seeds germinate after 10 to 20 days. Seeds sometimes germinate within 4 to 6 weeks although some varieties may take very much longer so please be patient. Plant out in the open ground in warmer countries or in a large container elsewhere.
